Tyrone, the son of Myra Pannell of Amityville NY and Robert E. Pannell, the husband of Marlene G. Pannell of St Albans NY received a commission as a 2dLt in the US Marine Corps Reserves in Quantico VA. He arrived in Vietnam on August 14, 1965 serving as a platoon commander with Company D, 1st Battalion, 7th Marines, 3d MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

South of the Chu Lai Military Complex while on a combat patrol along an abandoned railroad track near the vicinity of Phuoc An hamlet in Binh Son District of Quang Ngai Province a deadly explosion occurred. 2dLt Pannell was killed as a result of multi fragmentation wounds and another Marine was seriously wounded and evacuated as the result of an unknown explosive device which had been set up as a BT (booby trap).
