Thomas Yergey was a veteran of the Civil War. He enlisted September 18, 1861 with Co. D Sixth Pa. Cavalry, also known as Rush's Lancers. He took part in a number of hard engagements, with the hardest at Beverly's Ford in Virginia. The regiment has always held a reunion on the anniversary of that battle. He was the oldest volunteer fireman in Montgomery County and a charter member of the Philadelphia Fire Company in Pottstown. He was a bricklayer by trade, which he learned from his uncle, with whom he lived when he was three years of age. He and his wife were blessed with 21 children. He died on the stroke of noon and was buried in Pottstown East.
