David Thomas Barnes was born 17 January 1847 the son of Benjamin Barnes and Elizabeth Brenneisen. He grew up in Lisbon and in her early life was a wheelwright like his father and his brother Benjamin “Frank”. A scrap of paper in my possession and dated “Lisbon, May the 3rd 1869” reads as follows: “This day I Benjamin Barnes sold to B.F. Barnes and David T. Barnes his intire (sic) stock of wheelwright timber also all his undertaking lumber and also a lot of coffin handles and lace and screws and hinges and piece of silk for the amount of three hundred and fifty dollars”. David and Frank seemed to also have taken over the undertaking business from their father. At least they were making the coffins for local burials. By 1870 he was living with his brother Frank Barnes and his sister Sarah. Barnes. By 1880 he was living alone in Lisbon and was still listed as a wheelwright. On 28 May 1883 he married Hannah Clara Bunn and they had a daughter Hannah Virginia (b. 10 January 1885). David and Hannah bought a farm on “The Woodbine Road” where he farmed and lived the rest of his life. Their farm was located just north of Lisbon and the house, which was a large house, was torn down to make room for what was then the new route 40, now Interstate 70.
