WATERLOO - Howard W. Aldrich, 86, formerly of 1320 Upton Ave., died Friday, June 20, 2008, at Parkview Nursing & Rehab Center of natural causes.

He was born May 15, 1922, in Sioux City, son of Howard Wood and Mable Burgess Aldrich. He married Edith Martha Dyer on May 5, 1945, in St. Paul, Minn., at her parents' house. She preceded him in death Feb. 10, 2008.

Mr. Aldrich graduated from East High School, Denver, Colo., in 1940 and earned a bachelor's degree from Iowa State University. He was a landscape architect at Platt's Nursery for 40 years and worked with his son at Aldrich Landscaping for 10 years.

He was a lieutenant, commissioned as a bombardier, in the U.S. Air Force, serving in World War II. He was a long-time member of Grace Reformed Church, serving as an elder and deacon, was a member of the Iowa Nurserymen's Association and Iowa State Alumni Association, an avid golfer and played in the Senior League in Waterloo for many years.

Survived by three sons, Howard D. (Hope) and Winthrop P., both of Waterloo, and Douglas K. (Patricia) of Tulsa, Okla.; a daughter, Jane Heideman of Lakeland, Fla.; a sister, Betty Norman of Freeport, Ill.; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by his parents; his wife.

Services 11 a.m. Tuesday at Grace Reformed Church, with burial in the Garden of Memories Cemetery. Public visitation for an hour before services Tuesday at the church. Garden View Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
