LIBERAL, Kan. - Shirley Kay Martinez, 73, died at her residence on June 24, 2008, in Liberal, Kan.
She was born March 23, 1935, at Dresden, Kan., the daughter of Velcy and Viola (Webster) Jones.
She was a 1953 graduate of Oberlin High School, Oberlin, Kan. In 1968, she was one of the first licensed practical nurse graduates from Carl Sandburg College in Galesburg, Ill. She then completed her associate's degree in nursing at El Paso Community College. She earned a bachelor's degree in nursing administration from University of St. Francis in El Paso, Texas in 1997.
She had worked as a registered nurse for over 20 years at Sierra Medical Center in El Paso, Texas, where she established the out-patient surgery unit and was the program director. After moving to Liberal in 2000, she had been a substitute teacher for USD 480 schools until 2005. She had also worked at Southwest Medical Center before her retirement in 2008.
She was a former member of Soroptimist Club in Liberal.
On Feb. 19, 1954, she married H. E. 'Gene' Lindstrom in Oberlin, Kan. He preceded her in death on Nov. 16, 1971.
Survivors include two daughters, Elizabeth 'Betty Jean' Baughman and husband Roger of Galesburg, Ill., and Barbara Kay Stempel and husband Robert of Salley, S.C.; one son, Bruce Lindstrom of Liberal, Kan.; one daughter-in-law, Patricia 'Alice' Lindstrom of El Paso, Texas; one brother, Jerry Jones and wife Sue of Garden City, Kan.; one sister, Suzanne Williams and husband Hiram of Liberal, Kan.; 14 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and one son, Danny Lee Lindstrom.
Memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Kitch-Brenneman Funeral Home Chapel, with Pastor Kenny Whitson presiding. Burial will be later at Atwood Cemetery, Atwood, Kan. Friends may sign the guest register from 9 a.m. ? 5 p.m. Thursday and Friday at the funeral home.
