Jack D. Fisher, an aviation cadet who was in training for participation in WWII, passed away from head injuries received in an accident at the preflight school in San Antonio, Texas.

Jack was born in Stockton but had been a Tuolumne County resident for many years. He graduated from Sonora Union High School in 1935 and particularly enjoyed studying English and history. He excelled tennis, basketball and track.

Fisher passed away on the eve of his graduation as a pilot. Complete details of the accident were not immediately made public.

Jack was survived by his father, Earl G. Fisher of Alameda; his sister, Mrs. Pat Hogan of Alameda; four aunts, Mrs. X. O. Howe, Mrs. Grace Gatchell, Mrs. Mary Draper, all of Sonora; and Mrs. Carl Burger of Oakland.

Jack D. Fisher was born November 28, 1917 in Stockton, San Joaquin County. His older sister, Virginia L. Fisher, was born June 12, 1915 in Tuolumne County. Their mother's maiden name was Eckel.

On December 16, 1941, Jack left civilian life and went to San Francisco to enlist in World War II, Army Air Corps for the duration of the War or other emergency, plus six months, subject to the discretion of the President or otherwise according to law. Army of the United States - includes the following: Voluntary enlistments effective December 8, 1941 and thereafter; One year enlistments of National Guardsman whose State enlistment expires while in the Federal Service.

Jack was a high school graduate and worked at a gas station. He was Caucasian, 5'7" tall and weighed 145 lb. He was single and had no dependants.

PVT. Jack D. Fisher died non battle on January 13, 1944. He was one of 26 Tuolumne County residents who fought or prepared in WWII and did not come home alive.
