Rev. Kenneth Bates, 79, of Rishville, died Wednesday, Oct. 19, 2005 at Reid Memorial Hospital in Richmond, IN.

Born Oct. 20, 1925, in Wayne County, KY, he was the son of Theodore Bates and Lillie Morrow, both deceased. On June 22, 1945, he married (Mary) Mildred Burke, who survives.

Rev. Bates was a 1943 graduate of Brownstown High School. He was a member of the Southern Baptist Convention and was ordained in August 1953. He preached 15 years at the Andersonville Chapel Missionary Church, then two years at North Ridge Baptist Church in Dayton, Ohio. He has been a minister at the First Southern Baptist Church in Rushville for the last 36 years. The Bates Gospel Hour, moderated by Rev. Bates, is aired on WKWH twice a week. He previously had the program on a Greensburg station for a total of 35 years in radio ministry. During the 1940s and 1950s, Rev. Bates had lived in Muncie. He moved to Laurel, then to Glenwood until 1959, when he moved to Rush County. While in Rushville he was employed by Bussard Oldsmobile until 1963, then Harrold & Pell car dealership in Rushville until 1968. He owned and operated the Bates Body Shop in Rushville, IN.

Survivors besides his wife include a son Gary Bates of Franklin, Ohio; a daughter Connie Stocklin of New Castle, IN; one brother Howard Bates of Muncie; one sister Gladys McElfresh of Muncie, IN; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at First Southern Baptist Church in Rushville with Rev. Hobert Brandenburg officiating. Burial will follow in East Hill Cemetery in Rushville. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. at the church Friday.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Bates Gospel Music Hour (in care of WKWH) or the First Southern Baptist Church.
