Mondell P. White Dies in Utah Afton Long Illness
Mondell P. White, 50, former Star Valley resident died Saturday, Nov 15 at the LDS Hospital in Salt Lake City after a long illness.
Mr White was very well known here, before he left to make his home in Evanston and later Salt Lake City nearly two decades ago. He was a talented musician with an outstanding voice and was tenor soloist with the Tabernacle Choir in Salt Lake City for 16 years.
His wife the former Retia Thurman of Grover preceded him in death by exactly one year.
Funeral services were held in the Ivans LDS Ward Chapel in Salt Lake City Wednesday. A number of relatives from Star Valley attended. Burial was in the Salt Lake City Cemetery.

Services Held for Mondell P. White
Final respects were paid Wednesday, Nov 19 to Mondell Porter White, 50, former Star Valley resident who died Saturday Nov 15 at the LDS Hospital in Salt Lake City after a lingering illness. Funeral services conducted in the Ivins LDS Ward Chapel in Salt Lake were attended by a large number of relatives and friends from Star Valley and former valley residents living in that vicinity as well as a large group form his home ward.
Mondell Porter White was born Sept 22, 1908 in Thayne, a son of Thomas W. and Vilate Porter White. He received his schooling in Star Valley schools, and graduated from the Star Valley High School. He took to music like a duck takes to water, and was very prominent in musical presentations of all kinds, church, civic and school with his very fine tenor voice and his talent with musical instruments. He had leading parts in high school operas, and was a soloist with choir groups in every community where he made his residence. A peak in his musical career was reached when he was chosen as a member and later a soloist in the famous Tabernacle Choir, a position he held for 16 years, until illness prevented him from continuing this work. He made the tour to Switzerland a few years ago with the choir.
Mondell was a fine banjo player, and played in many dance orchestras in Star Valley when living here. He also played several other instruments.
He married Reita Thurman of Grover, Jan 30, 1931 in the Logan LDS Temple. She preceded him in death by exactly one year.
He worked at various occupations while living in Afton. He was a service station attendant and after graduating form barbering school, worked a that trade a few years. He moved with his family to Evanston about 20 years ago and worked as a barber there for several years before moving to Salt Lake City. He worked at several jobs in Salt Lake. For a number of years he was court clerk in the Third District Court and for some time was a cashier at the Utah State Tax Commission.
He was always a faithful worker in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Among his more important assignments, he served in the superintendency of his ward MIA at Evanston, and was a member of the Ivins Ward Bishopric for several years. He sang in ward choirs wherever he went.
Survivors include his two sons, Ballard T. White, Tempe Ariz.; Clayton M. White, Salt Lake City; three grandchildren; two brothers and four sisters: Orlan and Myron, Thayne; Mrs Elden (Leola) Allred, Fairview; Mrs Charles (Lucille) Call, Afton; Mrs Dean W. (Mildred) Straw, Salt Lake City; Mrs Burr (Zelpha) Dennis, Ririe, Idaho.
Burial was in Salt Lake City.
Attending funeral services for Mondell P. White in the Ivins Ward LDS Chapel in Salt Lake City Nov. 19 from Star Valley were the following: Mr and Mrs Ray S. Thurman, Mr and Mrs Stewart Thurman, Mrs Rulon Campbell, Mr and Mrs Ray M. Thurman, Mr and Mrs Clifford turner and son Allen, and daughter and son-in-law Mr and Mrs George Kimball, Mr and Mrs Elmo Newswander, Myron White and daughter Rama, Mr and Mrs Elden Allred, Bryce Allred, Mr and Mrs Orlan White and son Alma and daughter Oleta, Mr and Mrs Charles S. Call, Mr and Mrs Stayner W. Call, and Mr and Mrs Robert Hastings and Mr and Mrs J.C. Mallory.
Also attending were Mrs Paul Clark of Lovell, Wyo., Mr and Mrs Don Ashcraft of Logan, Mary and Kate Andersen, Salt Lake City, Carl Cook Salt Lake City, and a host of relatives and many childhood and schoolday friends from parts of Idaho, Utah and Wyoming.
