John Franklin Clayton enlisted in the CSA at Raleigh, NC at age of 19, March 1864. He was hospitalized at Charlotte with chronic bronchitis. He returned to duty on 20th June 1864. He was captured at Winchester, Va on July 20th, 1864. Confined at Camp Chase, Ohio on July 28th, 1864. He was paroled at Camp Chase on March 2nd, 1865. He was receives at Boulware's and Cox's Wharves, James River, Va, on March 10, 1865. He survived the war. Company H, 57 Regiment NC Troops, page 183. Submitted by Larry King, great nephew

(Note: Death certificate only says that he was buried at "Marvin Cemetery".) 74 years of age. Son of William and Mary Eleanor (Ellen) Westmoreland Clayton. He was never married, and had been a farmer. He was found dead in bed.
