James Rufus McLeod was the second son and fifth child of Alexander Calhoun McLeod and his first wife, Ida Cornelia Bennett. His mother passed away when he was 8 months old. His father remarried and the family relocated in 1902 from Richmond County to Robeson County NC. His stepmothers were Della Lorena Manning (until age 10) and Mary Catherine Terry.

He was a veteran of World War I.

Jim was married to Katherine Humphrey on April 15, 1922, in Robeson County. They are the parents of James Rufus McLeod, Jr. and Elizabeth Bennett McLeod, grandparents of Nancy Betts McLeod Fuhre of Texas, three great-grandchildren and at least five great great-grandchildren.

Jim worked in hospital administration, serving as the Business Manager of Thompson Memorial Hospital in Lumberton, Robeson County. At the time of his death, he was the Superintendent of Wayne Memorial Hospital in Goldsboro, Wayne County NC.

At age 61, he was the first of the 11 McLeod siblings and half-siblings to pass on. He also died at the youngest age.
