Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. A graduate of Columbia University in New York City, New York, and of Harvard Law School, Cambridge, Massachusetts, he volunteered his service when the Civil War started, and was commissioned as a Captain of Volunteers and Assistant Quartermaster. Tabbed to serve on the staff of Major General Ambrose E. Burnside, he was an Assistant Commissary of Subsistence for a time before being promoted to Major on July 22, 1862 and mustered in as an Aide-de-Camp to General Burnside. Through the balance of the war he served with General Burnside's command, the IX Army Corps, and on March 13, 1863 was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers for "gallant and meritorious services at the Battle of Fredericksburg, Va."
