Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He served during the Civil War as Colonel and commander of the 5th New York Volunteer Heavy Artillery. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1864 for "gallant and meritorious services in the engagements in and around Harper's Ferry, Va., in 1864".
