Politician, William Haines graduated the University of Maine in 1876 then went on to study law at the Albany Law School where he completed his law degree in 1878. He settled in Oakland, Maine (then West Waterville) where he established a successful law career. His political career consisted of the following: County attorney for Kennebec County from 1882 - 1887. Member of Maine State Senate 1888 - 1892. Member of Maine House of Representatives 1895. Attorney General for Maine 1896 - 1901. Member of Governor's Executive Council 1901 - 1905. In the fall of 1912 he successfully won the governor's seat and became the 49th governor of the State of Maine from 1913 to 1915. He did not go on to win the next election.
