Daughter of Frank and Bertha Kitchen, her father was English, her mother was German. Her siblings were William F. and Joseph. She first married Mr. Kean on October 14, 1919. Of this union were born Robert Donald Kean and Dr. William P. Kean.

Esther next married Bernard E. Christenson on August 16, 1950 in Marion Co., Oregon. A second marriage for both parties. This was a beloved period of being married to the "love of her life" for Esther. They were both very happy.

After her husband's death in 1958, Esther lived out her life in Corvallis and devoted herself to her beloved son, Bob, until he tragically preceded her in death in 1983. This event, and that of Bernard's death, weighed heavy on Esther.

Esther was a kind, warm, lovely person who made an impression on everyone who met her. As a single mother, Esther struggled to provide for her children and showed great fortitude and perseverance. Later in life, she was rewarded for her hardships, finding a life of ease with a man who treated her like a Queen, Bernard.
