Augustus was born in what is now the Czech Republic. As a young man he moved to Scotland where he met Jane Ingalls. They were married on 19 June 1868 in Edinburgh. Augustus, Jane and their first child, also Augustus, came to the United States in October of 1869. Augustus was a glass engraver with J. Hoare & Co. in Brooklyn and moved with the company to Corning, NY. While in Corning Augustus and Jane had three more children, James, John and Theresa.
At the time of his death Augustus was considered one of the best glass engravers in the United States. Some of his work is on display at the Corning Museum of Glass.
