Ralph William Meyer, 82, of Bahner, died Thursday, June 5, 2008, at Harry S. Truman Veterans' Memorial Hospital, in Columbia.

He was born May 23, 1926, in Bahner, a son of William and Margareta Mathilda Weller Meyer.

Ralph grew up in Bahner and attended St. John's Catholic grade school. He graduated from Smithton High School and attended business college in Sedalia. He was a member of the St. John's Catholic Church at Bahner, where he was baptized and confirmed. He served his country honorably in the United States Army during the Okinawa Campaign of World War II. He was wounded in combat and received a purple heart medal.

After the war, he spent time working in Alaska and Colorado, and later moved to Kansas City. He moved to Cole Camp after retiring from The Kansas City Star newspaper. He was a lifetime member of the Veteran's of Foreign Wars of Sedalia, the American Legion Post No. 305 of Cole Camp, and the Cole Camp Historical Society. He was an avid reader, and enjoyed history, sports, literature and more.

He is survived by one daughter, Lisa Marie Meyer, of Bahner; one sister, Mary Bockelman, of Cole Camp; eight nieces, Ann Ganson, Mary Lou Phillibur, Martha Weiss, Charlotte Monsees, and Karen Burks, of Sedalia, Marge Ketner of Overland Park, Kan., Jan Gray, of Iowa and Cindy Rhoads, of Columbia; and four nephews, Gene Meyer, Gary Meyer, Dave Velten, and Danny Velten, of Sedalia.

He was predeceased by one sister, Anna Velten; and one brother, Clarence D. Meyer.

Burial was at 1p.m. Monday, June 9, 2008, at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Cemetery in Cole Camp, with the Rev. Keith Branson officiating. Military rites were conducted by the Missouri Military Funeral Honor Guard.

A private memorial service was held by the family.

The family suggests memorial contributions in honor of Mr. Meyer be sent to the Fox Funeral Home, P.O. Box 37, Cole Camp.
