Richard Wood enlisted in the Confederate army early on as a Volunteer in the Virginian army. He enlisted for a one-year period on September 20th, 1861 in Princeton Mercer County, Virginia. At some point he was transferred from the 36th Virginia Infantry to the 23rd Battalion Virginia Infantry. The first of the muster rolls shows his enlistment into the 23rd as August 5th, 1862. Though in a different company, it was likely that he met/already knew the Hatcher family. As stated earlier in this text, a lot of these divisions were made of friends and families of a certain area. Also, Richard's daughter would eventually marry George W. Hatcher which was Silas Hatcher's son.

Most likely fought at the Battle of White Sulphur Springs and the Battle of Droop Mountain

He was sent out in June 15th, 1864 as a part of Thomas' Company of Guerilla fighters but was declared a deserter by June 23rd, 1864 around Lexington, VA.
