Enlisted in Gray's 28th Infantry Company D "Claiborne Invincibles" with brother-in-law, Dempsy Applewhite, on May 11, 1862. Fought in several skirmishes and battles in Louisiana. On the evening before the Battle of Mansfield he was detailed to serve in the hospital in Keachie, La. and remained there working as a doctor's assistant for the remainder of the war.
