GEORGE DAVIDS ALLEN by Dorthy Allen Bourne

"George Davids Allen, the first child of Samuel Jackson and Caroline Davids Allen, was born October 20, 1868 in Draper, Utah. His brother James was born in Lewiston in 1873, which means that the family had moved to Lewiston while George was very small.

George grew up in Lewiston with the rest of his brothers and one sister. A baby boy, Samuel Jackson Jr. was born after George, but he died in infancy.

George married Louie Brower at Lewiston on Aug.9, 1888. Their first five children were born before they moved to Hawkins Basin, West of Arimo. Six other children were born there. Their family totaled eleven children...ten sons and one daughter.

They homesteaded at Hawkins Basin and helped pioneer the area along with many other homesteaders who came there to work the soil. I am sure they had many good times with their family and many other families there.

The old Basin School House was the center of community activity and the dances held there were for old & young. Accidents happened too, as they do in all families. Their oldest son Lewis lost the sight in one eye through a knife accident and another son was thrown from a horse and received a serious neck injury.

Around 1913 the family left Hawkins Basin and moved to Mountain Home and then to the area that is now known as the Anderson Ranch Reservoir on the South Fork of the Boise River. From there they went down to a farm near Grandview. It's sad that there isn't a journal somewhere to give us accurate information and the details of living & raising a family in that era that we would love to know.

Uncle Jack told me of that move from Anderson Ranch to Grandview. He said Grandma had taken Gail and gone to visit Aunt Linnie and while she was gone, Grandpa and the boys done the moving. Uncle Jack said it was like going from winter to summer because it was early in the spring and it was so much warmer down near Grandview.

There was much to be done on each new farm because it all had to be surveyed and irrigation ditches dug. I'm sure they all worked very hard. The water had to be pumped from the Snake River and this cost $10 an acre. In time the Allen family sold their land and moved to the Hagerman Valley where water was plentiful & much cheaper.

I don't know much of Grandpa's later years. He & Grandma were divorced in 1926 and he spent time visiting his children. He seemed happiest when he could sit around swapping stories with men of the families he was visiting. He had mining interests in the Fairfield area and so spent time there, also.

He died June 11, 1937 in the Twin Falls Hospital. I'm sure he was a hard working, industrious man who always had a dream to do better. I'm sorry we don't have more details of his life that could tell us more of his dreams and adventures."
