Daryl Dee Magers
1927 – 2008
Daryl Dee Magers, 81, of Kirksville, Missouri, passed away unexpectedly, Tuesday (July 1, 2008) at Northeast Regional Medical Center in Kirksville.
Born January 12, 1927 in Gifford, Missouri, Daryl was the son of Ernest Dee and Zula May (Kerr) Magers. On December 2, 1951 in Gifford, Missouri, Daryl was united in marriage to Shirley Jean Mendell.
Daryl is survived by his wife Shirley of fifty-seven years; his son and daughter-in-law, George Ernest and Mary Magers of Kirksville, MO; two daughters and a son-in-law, Carin D. and Don Brandt of Gladstone, MO and Barbara Jean Magers of Kirksville, MO; six grandchildren, Daniel and Emily Brandt both of Gladstone, MO, Rachel Whitney and husband Mick of Unionville, MO, Edward Raymond Magers of O'Fallon, IL and Rebecca and Jordan Magers both of Kirksville, MO, as well as four great-grandchildren, Selby, Mattie, Clare and Will.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Mr. Magers was a life long resident of Macon and Adair counties. He was a graduate from Gifford High School and went on to receive a certificate in Animal Science from the University of Missouri in Columbia. From 1945 to 1946, Daryl served his country in the United States Army during WWII, receiving a WWII Victory Medal. After returning home, he was engaged in farming and the lumber yard business. In 1964, Daryl went to work for Fred King as his store manager at King Appliance for a number of years. Daryl later owned and operated his own furniture store (Magers Furniture Store) until retiring in 1992. Daryl was an avid deer hunter and Cardinal Baseball Fan.
Daryl was a very devoted husband, father and grandfather and loved spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was a Master Mason while being a member of the Elmer Masonic Lodge, was a co-founder of the National WWII Memorial in Washington, D.C. and was a member of the First Christian Church of Kirksville.
Funeral services with full military honors will take place 1:30 p.m. Thursday (July 3, 2008) at the Missouri State Veterans Cemetery in Jacksonville, Missouri.
