Corporal, Canadian Forces Military Police,
17 Wing Detachment in Dundurn, Saskatchewan. He was deployed at a staging base in the Persian Gulf region that provides aviation technical and logistics support services to Joint Task Force Afghanistan.

He was found dead in his dormitory room at Camp Mirage. The circumstances are under investigation and no further details have been released, although enemy action was ruled out.

Cpl Downey, age 36, was born in Montreal and raised in Toronto. He was described as a committed patriot who joined the military in response to the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. After graduating from the military police academy, he was posted at Cold Lake, AB and then Dundurn in 2007. He is survived by his wife, Cpl Vanessa Downey and their son, Adam; his parents Neil and Angela Downey, siblings Jo-Anna, Christopher and Andrew; and other family members.

Funeral Mass celebrated on Monday, July 14, 2008 at Notre Dame Cathedral Basilica, Ottawa.

He is the 86th Canadian soldier, along with one diplomat, to die in the Afghanistan mission since 2002.
