The following obituary appeared in the Dallas Morning News February 6, 1934.
"W. O. Connor dies. Financier dies after 67 years in Dallas commercial activity. He was Chairman of the board of a bank. He died at his home. He served as the first mayor of Highland Park and on the Dallas Park Board. He was 81, Chairman of the Board of the Republic National Bank and Trust. He died at 4:15 PM, Monday at his home, 4009 Armstrong after an illness of ten days. He was one of the best known bankers and businessmen of the south. Mr. Connor has been prominent in Dallas Commercial activities for 67 years. During his life, he was engaged in many civic affairs and served on two city governments. Funeral services will not be made Tuesday according to family members. Surviving are his wife [ Mrs. Lula Mays Connor ], one daughter, Mrs. Frank E. Austin, two sons, Brevard M. Connor and Eugene C. Connor and two grandchildren, Miss Dorothy Austin and Frank E. Austin, all of Dallas. Honoree pall bearers will be officers and directors of the bank. Mr. Connor came to Texas in 1859. He was born on a farm near Hambury, TN October 8, 1852. He was one of four children, one of whom is W. C. Connor late Mayor of Dallas. As an infant, the family moved to Corinth, MS for six years during which his father became Mayor of that city. After his father's death, the family moved to Madison, Arkansas and in 1859 came to Texas settling in Paris. Two years later they moved to Jefferson and in 1867 came to Dallas where several members of the family won distinction. Mr. Connor's formal education was limited to only a few months of formal schooling due to the changing and difficult working conditions of his youth spend during the civil war and reconstruction period. Being brought up in the nation's financial life and travels all over this county and Europe gave him an education. He begin work at age 14 when he went into business for himself and in 1872 he became a part of the Connor and Walker Company founded by his brother L. Meyer Connor. His work as a traveling representative gave him statewide knowledge that lead to him being appointed in 1878 to being the Traveling Salesman for the Sanger Company. Three years later, he was Wholesale and Financial Manager for the Sanger Company, a position he held until 1920 when he left Sanger after 42 years. He organized the Guaranty Bank and Trust February 14, 1920 and entered the banking business. He increased the Capital from $100,000 to 7 Millions and in January 1929, he was Chairman of the Board of the merged boards of the Republic and National Banks a position he held until 10 days ago. He was chair of the Board for several Banks, including one in Honey Grove, Texas and Waco. He was Director of the Austin Brothers' Bridge Company, Director of Wyatt Metal and Brands Company, Treasurer of the State Fair of Texas.
