His political influence was felt outside of Warren county and in 1908 he was elected state senator for the Warren and Clarke district. He was again a candidate in 1916 and was again elected, serving during his two year terms in the thirty-third and thirty-fourth, and in the thirty-seventh and thirty-eighth general assemblies.
While in the senate he was chairman of the sifting committee and in his last term he was a member of the judiciary committee for both sessions. He was the leading parliamentarian of the senate.
In 1912, he was a candidate in the primaries in the republican ticket for governor. There were two other candidates, Perry Holden and Lieut. Gov. George Clark. Governor Clark was nominated and elected.
