He was a farmer when he emigrated to New York, NY, USA, in 1907 to join several of his older brothers and sisters. He worked in construction when he married Catherine Cavanagh, from Ballybay, County Monaghan, Ireland, at St Patrick's Cathedral, New York City in 1913. They had 3 children, Mary, 1914, Michael J., 1915, and, Catherine, 1919. He was retired and lived in The Bronx, New York, at the time of his death, in 1965.
