Oliver was the eldest son of the twelve children born to Oliver and Ruby (WELLS) Wilcox. His grandfather was Isaiah Wilcox, a Baptist minister, who was the son of Stephen Wilcox, who was the son of Edward Wilcox, who emigrated from England and settled in Rhode Island at an early period in the history of the English colonies.

As there were so many children in his family and opportunities for education were severely limited in those days, Oliver was pretty much self-taught. He assisted his father on the family farm until his majority, then was engaged in shipbuilding for about ten years at New Bedford and other shipbuilding centers.

After coming to Nottawa Twp., St. Joseph Co., MI to choose a farm, Oliver returned to Rhode island to acquire a wife. He married 1. Harriet VINCENT 21 February, 1836 at Dartmouth, Bristol Co., RI. The couple immediately returned to Michigan where they commenced farming. They had two known children before Hattie's death in 1842 in Nottawa, St. Joseph Co., MI. They were: Abner Vincent Wilcox (1841-1863, died after being taken prisoner at Chattanooga in the Civil War) and Harriet "Hattie" Wilcox (1842-?).

After four years as a widower, Oliver married 2. Lucy Ann KENT in 1846, probably at Kalamazoo. Oliver and Lucy were the parents of Oliver Kent Wilcox (1847-1928, married 1. Sara Ann PURVIS, married 2. Azelia "Zelia" HOLMES), Lucy Ann Wilcox (circa 1848-before 1880, married Marvin D. WILSON), Celestia Wilcox (circa 1853-died young), Frank Wilcox (circa 1856-?) Flora Wilcox (circa 1858-?) and William Oliver Wilcox (circa 1863-?).

In 1852, Oliver and Lucy Wilcox were founding members of the Centreville Baptist Church in Centreville, St. Joseph Co., MI.
