Odessa was raised by her grandmother (Audrey Driscoll Rayburn) and father (Winnard Huff) when her mother (Ettie) died (at 24 years old) in childbirth with a 2nd child. The baby did not survive either. Odessa was only 3 years old when her mother died. She grew up in Holly, one of the small communities around Groveton (Trinity County). She married Jesse Oran Goodman on Christmas Day in 1957 in Possum Walk, Trinity Co, TX. They were married by Rev. Mericle. Their first child (a son) was born while Jesse was in the Navy, stationed in Long Beach, California. Three more children (girls) were born when they lived in San Antonio, Texas.

Odessa worked as a school crossing guard for awhile. She also managed a Ron's Fried Chicken and worked as a cafeteria cook at an industrial plant.

Odessa had diabetes and lost her sight. Her total health declined fast and she was moved to a nursing home. After a short time she came to live with her daughter (Cheryl) who cared for her until her death.
