He lived in Lawrence, MA, from age 8 until 13, when he moved to the Dominican Republic with his mother. He returned to Lawrence after graduating from high school in the island country. He attended the Leahy School and played baseball with the Prospect Hill Little League. He had been missing in Iraq since May 12, 2007. He was among three members of the 2nd Brigade of the 10th Mountain Division captured by terrorists during an ambush south of Baghdad. Four other soldiers were killed in the attack. He held the rank of Army specialist when he was kidnapped and was promoted to sergeant in January 2008.

As part a group burial, Alex also has a memorial at Arlington National Cemetery
