Lincoln, Ill., Aug. 24. - Robert S. Whiteman, one of the prominent retired merchants of Middletown, and for a term of years, postmaster of that city, died at his home in Middletown Friday evening, Aug. 23, 1912, following a sickness of several weeks, aged 66 years, 7 months and 23 days.

He was born in Blusston [sic?], Wells county, Ind. on Jan. 1, 1845, but has resided in this state since the war.

He enlisted in the Seventh Illinois infantry and served for a period of three years in the war of the rebellion.

Followng the war, he came to Logan county where he engaged in mercantile business and also was appointed postmaster.

Surviving are the widow and seven children: Mrs. Belle Slathers [sic?, Flathers?], of Chicago; Mrs. Grace Lynch, of St. Louis; Mrs. Minnie Rose, of Corycon, Iowa; Henry S. Whiteman, a soldier in the regular army; Jacob, Joseph and Charles Whiteman, all of Middletown. He is also survived by three brothers, Newton Whiteman, of Lincoln; Jacob Whiteman, of Boston; and George Whiteman, of Stillwater, Iowa. One sister, Mrs. Libby Lewis, lives at Danville.

The funeral occurred at the Methodist church in Middletown.

Burial in Irish Grove cemetery.
