Paul later joined the United States Navy where he served as a baker aboard the US Cabot Aircraft Carrier during World War II.
Paul was united in marriage to Letha Mae Cadwell on April 10, 1945, at Hiawatha, Kansas. They were the parents of five children: Lyle, Leslie, Sonya, Jodie and Becky. Paul and his family lived and farmed in the Walnut, Iowa area for over 46 years. He raised cattle and hogs, besides the regular farming operation.
Paul enjoyed bowling, hunting, fishing, watching sports in which his kids and grandkids participated, and spending time with his family and friends, especially his grandkids when they came to the farm.
He was known for his great sense of humor and was a mediator at the Assisted Living Center in Avoca, Iowa. He also enjoyed working on his computer and had put together a computer slide show for the other residents. He was well loved by all who knew him.
Paul was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Walnut, and the Walnut AmVets and VFW. His wife Letha died on October 15, 2002, and Paul continued to make his home at the Avoca Lodge Assisted Living Center.
Paul died on Tuesday, August 29, 2006 at Avoca Lodge Assisted Living, having attained the age of 80 years, 10 months and nine days.
In addition to his parents and his wife, Letha, Paul was preceded in death by his sister, Maxine Baldwin.
Paul is survived by his children: Lyle (Carolyn) Abel, of Tumwater, WA, Leslie (Terri) Abel, of Walnut, IA, Sonya (Larry) Schuler, of Marne, IA, Jodie (Mark) Knudsen, of Atlantic, IA, and Becky (Dave) Thielen, of Elkhorn, NE; 11 grandchildren: Paul Abel, Mathew, Gavin and Derek Abel, Eric and Joshua (Dina) Abel, Heather (Brett) Cox, Dustin Van Horn, Christopher, Nicholas and Michaela Knudsen; five great-grandchildren: Justice Abel, Dillion Cox, Carter Cox, Jadyn Cox and Garret Van Horn; brothers and sisters: Lorene Sieck, of Walnut, Lucille (Dale) Christensen, of Atlantic, IA, Howard Abel and wife, of Walnut; special friend, Mada Wahling; nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.
Funeral Services were held on Friday, September 2, 2006 at 11:00 AM at the First Presbyterian Church in Walnut, Iowa, with Pastor David Krueger as the clergy.
Interment was in Southlawn Cemetery, Atlantic, Iowa.
