On April 7, 1912 as Richard V.W. Negley, he married Laura Burleson at Washington, District of Columbia.
He attended Phillips Exeter Academy, graduating in 1905 and Yale University, graduating in 1909. He served in World War I. After the War he returned to San Antonio and founded and operated the Negley Paint Company. He was also a Director of the Alamo National Bank.
