Olympic Games Gold Medalist Athlete. A 1938 graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, he was part of the United States Olympic Equestrian team that competed in the 1948 Summer Olympic Games in London, England. Riding the horse "Reno Palisade", he and teammates Frank Henry and Earl Foster Thomson won the Gold Medal in the Team Eventing Competition, beating out the equestrian teams from Sweden and Mexico. He spent twenty-eight years in the United States Army, seeing service during World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War before retiring in 1966 as a Colonel.
