Hollis Wilford Nielsen, age 81, passed away of natural causes March 15, 2001 in Sandy, Utah. He was born July 26, 1919 in Garfield, Utah to Andrew W. and Laura Jane Johnson Nielsen.
He married Erma A. Snow May 14, 1942 in Evanston, Wyoming.
At age 17 he began his 48 year railroad career on the Bingham & Garfield RR (Kennecott), Utah Railway, and Santa Fe Railway as a fireman and engineer.
He served as a railroad engineer during World War II in several campaigns, including, Tunisia, North Africa, Southern France, Naples, Rome, Central Europe, and the Rhineland. He received six Bronze Star medals for valor. He was the first fireman on the famous Heber Creeper RR, and gave countless hours of volunteer training to fireman and engineers of steam locomotives there. He is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, VFW, DAV, and the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen and Enginemen (UTU) for 60 years.
Survived by his wife, Erma; children, Charles (Nola), Seven (Adrienne), Peggy Lynn (Ralph R.) Adams, and Michael; 19 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Norma (George) Franks, of Sebastopol, CA.
Preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, and one brother.
Funeral services will be held 12 noon Tuesday, March 20, 2001 at the Magna Stake Center, 3084 South 8400 West.
