James M. Harris (also found as Harriss) was born in North Carolina in 1822 and became a grocer/farmer in Raleigh, Wake Co. He married 3 times and had 7 children. The first marriage was to Elizabeth T. Hamlet with a marriage bond issued Dec 4, 1848 out of Caswell Co. In 1850 the young couple was living in Wake Co. with his brother Berry and sister Clara. By 1860 James had remarried to Sarah E. Campbell who was a neighbor of the family in 1850. The marriage record for Sarah and James was issued in Wake Co on Dec 14 1858. James a widow again in 1862 then married Annie whose father John Hubert DeCarteret was from France and mother Elizabeth Armstrong was from Charleston, SC. Both of her parents and a brother are buried at Oakwood.

James and Elizabeth's children were Florence, Thomas & Sally (twins)and Charles. Charles date of birth was listed as 1858 which makes it harder to place him with the correct mother, but it is most likely Elizabeth. Ellen was the daughter of Sarah Campbell. His marriage with Annie produced children Mary, Gertrude, John H. and Beulah M. Harris. James died in 1899 and is buried next to Sarah. Elizabeth, Sarah, Annie, James Jr. and James are all in section e-2 lot 47. There is the possiblity of another child, Jane H. Harris, listed in the same section with no birth or death dates.

James and Elizabeth Hamlet Harris are grandparents to Joseph Melville Broughton thru their daughter Sallie Ann. Joseph Melville Broughton is buried at Montlawn was a Governor and US Congressman.

James's sister Clara married John A. Hogue. This marriage produced no known children and she is also buried in the City Cemetery.

The Hamlet family name was carried on thru grandchildren Hamlet K. Harris, whose mother Florence married James T. Harris of Franklin Co, NC. and Julia Hamlet Harris whose parents were Thomas Harris and Ella Ida Perry. Julia was a Professor at Meredith College for many years.
