A Christian Brother who served and died during the Yellow Fever epidemic of 1873.
Brother Hosea of Mary (John Hewitt) was born in Montreal and entered the Novitiate in 1861 in Montreal. He died in Memphis, Tennessee, on May 1, 1873, at the age of 27 and is buried in Memphis in Calvary Cemetery.

John Hewitt was born in Montreal in 1846. He entered the Novitiate at Montreal where he received the religious name of Brother Hosea in 1861. He was gifted with the ability to learn modern languages, but at first had great difficulty in controlling a class. From Ellicott City, Maryland, he was sent to Memphis, Tennessee, in 1872 for a rest. Brother Hosea gradually weakened after contracting Yellow Fever and died on May 1, 1873. He was buried Calvary Cemetery, Memphis, Tennessee. Brother Hosea died at the young age of twenty-seven, having been a De La Salle Christian Brother for twelve years.
