Ben was cleaning a well when he was overcome by "black gas". His younger brother, Sidney, went in to help and was overcome by the same gas.
Ben was married only once and that was to Malinda Caroline Brown. He left four surviving sons with another on the way. Malinda remarried three years later to L.B. Plummer and became a stepmother to his children. Malinda is buried in Hon Cemetery, Scott County, as the obvious second wife to Plummer. She never had children by Plummer. Ben's and Malinda's three oldest boys served in World War I and settled in Texas. The other surviving son, Thomas Benjamin, moved to California.
