From The Belle Fourche Bee, page 8 - 11 Feb 1943: Funeral services for Leander Crofford, 82, who passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs George Thompson in Ekalaka MT, were held Monday of last week at Alzada. Rev Stanley of Ekalaka conducting the rites. Burial was in the Alzada Cemetery. Death was due to the infirmities of advanced age. mr Crofford had been a resident of that section for about 32 years, going there from SD, where he spent a year in 1910 and filing on a homestead south of Alzada across the state line in WY. The family lived there engaging in farming and ranching until after the death of Mrs Crofford about three years ago. Mr Crofford has since made his home with his daughter. The family were well known in that vicinity and Rev Stanley spoke at the services very highly of Mr Crofford as an outstanding citizen, one of those with strength and courage to locate on the primitive prairie and build a home and help in the development of the community. Deceased was born in NO 5 June 1860. When he was a child his family moved to NE. he was married to Miss Belle Coffman in Jan 1887. Four children, three of whom survive their parents, were born to this union. Mr and Mrs Crofford and family came to SD in 1909 and after a year in this state moved to the WY homestead. Surviving are three daughters: Mrs R M Rieman of Markleyville CA, Mrs Al Olson of Reno NV, and Mrs Thompson. Also three grandchildren.
