ASHLEY WARD MOTHER SUMMONED BY GRIM REAPER, LEAVES LARGE FAMILY

A gloom of sadness was cast over the entire community Thursday evening of last week when word went out that Mrs. Mary Herbert, wife of Joseph Herbert had passed away suddenly at her home in Ashley. Mrs. Herbert became ill early Thursday morning and throughout the day medical skill and loving hands did all in their power to prolong her life but to no avail for death came that evening whereby she made the supreme sacrifice for motherhood.

Mary Agnes Cook was the daughter of John and Agnes Nuttall Cook and was born July 3, 1885 at Wallsburg, Wasatch County, Utah. When but a small child she came with her parents to Ashley Valley and settled in Naples. She grew up as an active worker in the church and in her early life was a member of the Naples choir. On January 1, 1904 she was married to Joseph William Herbert and to this union were born eleven children eight of whom are living.

At the opening of the Uintah Indian reservation Mrs. Herbert with her good husband went there to Hayden and worked dilligently to help build a home. After remaining there seven years they moved to Ashley Ward which since then has been their home. While at Hayden Mrs. Herbert was a sincere worker in the Relief Society and has been first counselor in the Ashley Relief Society for over three years. She was a devoted wife and mother always remembering the duties placed upon her as such never shirking those duties at any time. Her entire life was so spent that the memory of it stands as a monument, to be long remembered by her loved ones and all who knew her.

Besides her husband, she is survived by eight children: Mrs. Alberta Winn, Alfreda, Thomas, Vera, Afton, Bernice, Belva and Earl, one sister and eight brothers, her father having passed away early last Sunday morning.

Impressive funeral services were held in Vernal Sunday at one o'clock at the First Ward Chapel under the direction of the Ashley Ward bishopric. The singing was rendered by a double mixed quartet from Naples. The chapel was neatly decorated with white drapes and cut flowers and the floral offerings were profuse and beautiful some being sent by the classmates of the bereft girls and boys.

Six brothers of the departed woman acted as pallbearers. The services opened with the song, "Come, Come Ye Saints," after which Elias Winn offered the invocation. "Though Deepening Trials" was then rendered and President A. G. Goodrich was the first speaker who spoke of Christ's life as axample of the life we should live here and of what the gospel plan meant to us as a people. The song "Some Happy Day" was beautifully rendered by the quartet.

James M. Shaffer was the next speaker and spoke of the early life of the departed and also gave some faith promoting incidents. Bishop Carl Preece of Ashley when spoke of the faithfullness of Mrs. Herbert in her calling as a wife, a mother and a church worker. He told of how she enjoyed her work in the gospel and of her willingness to always administer to other's wants, also to the harmony and love that existed in the home. The quartet then sang, "Oh What Songs of the Heart" after which the benediction was pronouced by Alma Preece. A large cortege followed the remains to the Vernal Cemetery where the grave was dedicated by Bishop Byron Goodrich of Naples. The one sister living in Canada and two brothers living in Colorado were unable to attend the services. The people of the entire Ashley Valley extend their deepest sympathy to Mr. Herbert and his children in their sorrow.
