Brigadier General Henry H. Denhardt was a burly soldier who fought two wars, served as Governor of Kentucky, was divorced by his wife and settled down in 1938 on a farm in Oldham County. There he took up with Mrs. Verna Garr Taylor, a widow reknown as "the most beautiful woman in two counties" (Oldham and Henry). They became engaged but did not marry. On the dark, chilly evening of Nov 6, 1936 the 40-year-old Taylor ended up dead in a ditch along Highway 22, outside Louisville, a bullet lodged near her heart. Denhardt's .45 caliber revolver 4 feet from her body.
General Denhardt said it was suicide; Mrs. Taylor's family said it was murder. At the trial her three brothers sat grim-faced in the front row, never took their eyes off Denhardt. When the jury disagreed, it was whispered all over the two counties that "the Garr boys" were out to "get" the General. Get him they did, in front of a Shelbyville hotel, on Sept 20. He died on the steps, in a burst of pistol fire.
