He was born Aug. 9, 1908, to Martin and Hattie (Sterberg) Rose at Muskegon, Mich., where he spent his early years.
He married Ruby Waugh on March 31, 1930, at Effingham, Ill. The family moved to Los Angeles in 1944. He owned and operated a hardware store until he retired and moved to Brewster in 1977.
He was named honorary mayor of the Los Angeles community of Highland Park and was a member of the Optimist Club and the Pasadena Elks Club.
He is survived by four sons, Robert of Bridgeport, William of Long Beach, Calif., Howard of Brewster and Phillip of Fort Walton Beach, Fla.; a sister, Henrietta Billings of Muskegon; 15 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife in 1987.
