Eli Newlin Marshall was the son of Alfred Marshall and Hannah Woody. He was a veteran of the Civil War as were his brothers, Thomas S. Marshall, Jonathan S. Marshall, Mahlon Woody Marshall, and William Hadley Marshall, and his father. Eli lived in several States including Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Missouri, and Kansas. He patented land in Clay County, Iowa but left after about five years. He worked as a farmer and blacksmith.
