The son of a farmer grew up in Dresden/Germany. After the cadet school he visited the academy of arts in Dresden and became a poster draftsman. Later he took theatrical lessons with Erich Ponto who provided in 1922 his first engagement in the "Dresden State Theatre". After engagements in Lübeck, Frankfurt and Hamburg he went to Berlin where he played at the "German Theatre" and in the "State Theatre" with Gustaf Gründgens. He played his first small film role already in the silent movie "Der Herzensdieb" in 1927. In the Ufa time (1930s till the 1940s) he counted to the most significant personalities of the german movies. After the end of the WWII he was the director of the "Berliner Tribuene". From 1956 to 1962 he was a member of the "Burgtheater" of Vienna. He is best known as GenLt. Schmidt-Lausitz in the famous movie "The Devils's General". He played in dozens of movies.
Viktor de Kowa first marriage was to Ursula Grabley that ended in divorce. His second marriage was to Michiko Tanaka that lastet until his death. Both Viktor de Kowa and his wife Michiko Tanaka was anti nazi during the war and helped a lot of people.
