Thomas J. Duncan To Be Buried Here, Following Services To-morrow
Last rites for Thomas J. Duncan, 92, a pioneer of California, and one of the early settlers in Fresno County, who died yesterday at his home, 304 Abby Street, will be held at 2 P.M. to-morrow at the Mission Undertaking Company's Chapel, followed by burial in Mountain View Cemetery. He is survived by three sons, Andrew F., and E. Ray Duncan of Fresno and Roy E. Duncan of Los Angeles; a daughter, Mrs. James A. Ward; a brother, Andrew S. Duncan, both of Fresno, and two grandchildren, Virginia Lee Duncan and Mrs. E. Malcolm of Los Angeles.
Duncan came to Fresno in 1871, the year after his marriage to Miss Martha Miller of Stockton, where he had lived since arriving in California in 1853 with his parents and five other brothers. The family came across the plains from Lawrence, Mo., starting in May, 1853, with eight wagons and 500 head of cattle.
Duncan was engaged in the sheep business when he first came in Fresno county. He later purchased ten acres covering a portion of Diana Street, at that time on the outskirts of Fresno. He served for a number of years as vice president of the Fresno Loan and Savings Bank and was a director of the Fowler Switch Canal Company, which he helped to organize."
