BALLINGER -- Martha Lou Fish McAlister, 83, of Ballinger, passed away on Thursday, February 20, 2003 at her home.

Martha Lou McAlister was born on October 29, 1918 to David Roscoe Fish, Jr. and Edna (Roberts) Fish in Lawrenceville, Illinois. She graduated from Lawrenceville Township High School and attended nursing school in Olney, Ill. There she met her husband to be who was a patient. She married James H. McAlister on October 10, 1938 in Owensboro, Kentucky. They lived in Illinois, Utah, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Texas, while her husband worked in the oilfield. She worked at various hospitals during that time. The family moved to Ballinger, Texas in 1952, which they have called home since.

Martha worked for the Ballinger Memorial Hospital for 33 years and retired in 1986. She worked in all phases of patient care. While working she became better known as "Mrs. Mac." During her last years while working in Ballinger she became a state and national officer for the LVN Association. She also taught student nurses, preparing them for the state LVN exam.

For many years she attended all of the Ballinger games in town and on the road. She was an avid "Bearcat" fan. When she was unable to go after her health failed, the 2003 Lady Cat basketball team came to visit her at her home. After retirement, she took care of her husband who died January 2, 1993. Taking care of friends and family was her calling after retiring. She traveled to be with those she loved up until her health failed in the fall of 2002.

She is survived by a loving family who will greatly miss her. They are daughter, Sue Ann McDow of Ballinger; son, Joe J. McAlister and wife, Judy of Abilene and son, John McAlister and wife, Loretta of Ballinger; brother, David R. Fish of Belle Plains, Iowa; sister, Helen Fish Sizemore of Arlington, Virginia; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and many many nieces and nephews.

Family visitation will be Saturday, February 22nd from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Rains-Seale Funeral Home. Graveside services will be Sunday, February 23rd at 2:30 p.m. at Old Runnels Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of San Angelo.
