Charles H. Barton was the son of Ira Moore Barton (1796-1867) and Marla Waters Bullard (1800-1883). He married Sarah Anne White at Madison, Indiana, September 28, 1861. He was a resident of Chicago, Illinois, when he was commissioned a 1st Lieutenant and mustered into Company G (Mechanic Fusileers), 56th Illinois Infantry, January 28, 1862. 1st Lieutenant Barton was mustered out February 5, 1862, due to a reorganization of the regiment. He was a resident of Madison, Wisconsin, when he was commissioned a captain and mustered in as commander of Company K, 40th Wisconsin Infantry, at Camp Randall May 24, 1864. Captain Barton resigned his commission at Milwaukee, Wisconsin, September 16, 1864. He was living with Sarah and son James at Topeka, Kansas, in 1870 and working as a surveyor. He was still there in 1880. Sometime thereafter he relocated to Santa Rosa, California, where he remained until he died. He was a member of Santa Rosa's Ellsworth Post, No. 20, Grand Army of the Republic. After his death Elizabeth filed for a Civil War widow's pension in California August 8, 1890, and received application No. 4,66,429 and certificate No. 349,718.
