A double amputee and Korean War veteran, Pat 'Old Man' Cavanaugh was a fixture in downtown Davenport, Iowa, where he lived in a studio apartment above The Coffee Dive. He was seen daily in the coffee shop with his laptop computer, and was known to many downtown residents and workers. He was known for his intelligence and friendliness, playing cards and the guitar with friends at the coffee shop. Among his varied interests were Egyptian heiroglyphics, number systems, and linguistics. His apartment was filled with books. Three weeks prior to his death, he had been diagnosed with lung cancer. On the day of his death, he left the coffee shop, telling his friends that he was going to the bank and would be right back. Thirty minutes later, a worker at a downtown restaurant called police to check on him. Police found him dead in his wheelchair in the 2nd Street courtyard in front of the Davenport Skybridge. He is survived by two adult children and a host of friends.
