William Henry was born to Benjamin Alphord Woodward and Ethelna Bennett.

Although William Henry's headstone is engraved with the birth information of January 11, 1836 in Virginia,family records in the possession of his direct descendants state he was born January 10, 1833 in Alabama.

He was a Confederate veteran; he enlisted November 11, 1861 at Galveston, Texas and was discharged June 19, 1865 at Galveston Island. He served under McGruder, along with Frank Crowder, who later became his brother-in-law.

William Henry married:

(1) Margaret Jane Raines December 20, 1853 in Robertson County, Texas.

They had seven children:

Satira Caroline Woodward (1856 - 1919)
Guy A. Woodward (1858 - 1865)
Columbus Elijah Woodward (1860 - 1924)
