James Waldon Taylor Sr.
CARRIERE, Miss., - Mr. James Taylor, Sr. died July 11, 2008, in Picayune, MS. A graveside memorial service will be held at a later date in Killian Baptist Church Cemetery. Shives Funeral Home is assisting the family.
Mr. Taylor was born March 17, 1937, in Clinton, IN, a son of the late Samuel Taylor, first cousin to WWII Army correspondent Ernie Pyle, and Ilo Thorne Taylor. Mr. Taylor retired as a truck driver after 51 years. Mr. Taylor was a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, Camp 373, honorary member of the 77th division, member of the "Million Mile Club" for Marten Transport, as well as a member of Killian Baptist Church. He was an avid racing fan and military history enthusiast.
Survivors include a son, James Taylor; daughters, Teresa Kautz, Cindy (David) Taylor-Matuse, Victoria Taylor; grandchildren, Matthew Kautz, Camiese Kisner, Larry Kisner, Beth Kisner; brothers, Gerald Taylor and Billy Taylor. Mr. Taylor was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Virginia Anne Taylor of Columbia; his parents of Gary, IN; brother, Harold Taylor of Gary, IN, and grandson, Samuel Kautz of Terre Haute, IN.

He loved traveling, old trains, reading, racing, and visiting historical places, in particular civil war battlefields. And he really loved his family. He was married 31 1/2 years to the love of his life, and loved her for the rest of his life. He was a retired truck driver, and he drove for many companies including but not limited to: Marten Transport, Bendix, NAB, Mason Dixon, Roses, Drake Produce, Bell Diamond Express, White House and Bowman. He was a Presbyterian growing up, and switched to Baptist in the early 1980's. He joined Killian Baptist Church with his wife and daughter on April 3, 1988, their 30th wedding anniversary.
He took great pride in being an honored guest and presenter at the dedication of the naming of the Ernie Pyle Media Center in Fort Jackson, South Carolina. He was mentioned in the book Home Country by Ernie Pyle briefly as the cousin Ernie's dog would hide from.
He was a wonderful, loving man who was loved by many, and is very deeply missed. He will never be forgotten.
