Playwright and theatre proprietor. His most successful play was perhaps
"Two Roses", a comedy, produced at the Vaudeville theatre starring Sir Henry Irving in the lead role as Digby Grant and ran for 300 hundred performances. His other plays included "Pickwick", based on Charles Dickens "Pickwick Papers" (1871). Born in London, after an early career at an architects office, he began to write plays which included "A Pretty Piece of Chiselling" (1864) and "Dr Davy" (1866). His farce "Pink Dominos" (1877) ran for 500 hundred performances at the Criterion Theatre, which starred his wife, Mary Moore. His operetta, "The Spectre Knight, ran as a companion piece to Gilbert and Sullivan's "The Sorcerer" and then "H.M.S Pinafore" at the Opera Comique in 1878. He also wrote "Brighton", a farcical comedy (1888), among other later plays.
