Betsey was one of County"s best known pioneers.
mourned by many. Lacking but four days of reaching her ninety-sixth milestone. Mrs. Devendorf died Sunday morning at U.B.A. Hospital. Death resulted from blood poisoning which followed a burn on her hand.
Ancestors in the Revolution.
Mrs. Deveondorf ancestry was disinguished, her father's father being a member of General George Washingtons staff and a direct descendant of General Israel Putnam. Her mothers's father fought in the Revolutionary War and also in the French and Indian wars.
She was born in Oneida county, NY in 1815. When she was 20 yrs of age she married Daniel Devendorf, who left her a widow 20 yrs ago. they came to Michigan in 1842, making their way over land with ox teams from Detroit to Lowell and thence back into the woods to what is now known as Vergennes. There were no roads and a blazed trail was the only mark to follow. Mr. Devendorf was the only carpenter and joiner for miles around and to him fell the task of framing the pioneers homes, and incidentally the unpleasant task of making their coffins.
Educational facilities in that district were not great, and for the benefit of the children the family moved nearer to Lowell and in 1853 came to GR. settling on a farm at Rumsey's corners, now known as Fuller station. Mr. Devendorf bought one of three toll bridges and conducted it for a number of years.
