Ezra Payson Savage 1923-2004

NORRIDGEWOCK -- Ezra Payson Savage, 81, of Norridgewock passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by loved ones after a long, courageous battle with cancer on Sunday, June 27, 2004.

Raised in Smithfield, he was born on May 7, 1923, son of Hiram and Martha (Grant) Savage. He was educated in local schools.

He entered the service at a young age, serving his country from 1942 to 1945 in the European Theater. After his discharge from the Army he returned to his home town of Smithfield and started his family. In August 1975, he married Beatrice Miner of Norridgewock, where he made his home of 29 years.

Ezra was employed by Diamond International of Oakland as a log truck driver. He also drove for Norrwock Shoe in Norridgewock. In the early 1960s he received "Truck Driver of the Year" award.

His hobbies included gardening and reading. He especially enjoyed reading books of northern Maine and the logging industry. He also enjoyed telling stories of days gone by.

He was predeceased by his parents; a brother, Merton Savage; an infant daughter and a stepson, Harold Baker.

He is survived by his loving wife, Beatrice Savage; and his nine children of a previous marriage, Mickey Savage and wife, Cretia, Tony Savage, Glenda Lewis and husband, David, Annette Hilton and husband, Gary, all of Norridgewock, Darlene Bell and husband, Steve, of Anson, Sandra Murphy and husband, Jim, of Lyman, Jimmy Savage and wife, Ronda, of Oakland, Theda Strout and companion, George Lint, of Winslow, Martha Bilodeau and husband, Dwayne, of Livermore; stepchildren Marie McMahon of Waterville, Doug Baker and Bill Baker of California, Roberta Wise of Gorham, Karen Gureau of Rhode Island, Bette Hadaway of South Carolina and their families; 26 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; a special stepgranddaughter, Ramona Freeman and husband Arnold of Oakland. He is also survived by three loving sisters, Gertrude Ricker of North Anson, Angie Everett of Norridgewock and Estelle Rollins of Bingham; several nieces and nephews.

At Dad's request there will be no visiting hours. A graveside service will take place at 11 a.m. Friday, July 2, at the East Mercer Cemetery, Mercer, with the Rev. Dale Thistle officiating.

Donations may be made in Ezra's memory to the Pine Tree Society for Handicapped Children & Adults, P.O. Box 518, Bath, ME 04530.

Arrangements are under the direction of Smart & Edwards Funeral Home, 183 Madison Ave., Skowhegan.
